Don't Be Too Busy for God
Luke 10:41-42“Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed — or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
The school year has a way of sneaking up on us. One day it's summer, slow and warm, and the next the alarms are set, the backpacks are packed, and the calendar is full of meetings, practices, drop-offs, and deadlines.
It is so easy in the rush to let the most important thing slip. We mean to spend time with God. We plan to. But the morning gets away from us, the evening collapses into exhaustion, and before we know it, a whole week has gone by without sitting at His feet.
Jesus had something to say about this. When He visited the home of Martha and Mary, Martha was busy with all the preparations — good things, necessary things, hospitable things. But Mary sat at the Lord's feet and listened. And Jesus said she had chosen what is better.
Notice He didn't say Martha's work was wrong. He said her worry was. The problem wasn't the serving; it was the being 'worried and upset' about many things when only one thing was truly needed.
Sister, as this school year begins, choose the one thing. You can still pack the lunches, attend the meetings, and cheer at the games. But don't let the busy crowd out the better. Start your day with Him, even if it's just a whispered prayer over your coffee. Keep His Word close. And let His presence be the anchor that holds your full calendar in place.
He is not asking you to do more. He is inviting you to sit with the One who holds it all together.
Father, as the school year begins, keep my heart anchored in You. In the middle of the rushing and the full calendar, remind me to sit at Your feet. Help me choose the one thing that is needed — Your presence — and let everything else flow from that place of rest.
Reflect
- 1.What is currently filling your calendar that is quietly crowding out time with God?
- 2.What would choosing 'the better thing' look like in your morning routine this week?
- 3.How can you invite His presence into the ordinary moments of your busy days?
