What Is in Your Hands?
Exodus 4:2“Then the Lord said to him, 'What is that in your hand?' 'A staff,' he replied.”
Moses was standing on holy ground, sandals off, heart pounding. God had just spoken from a burning bush and given him an impossible assignment — go to Pharaoh, lead a nation out of slavery. And Moses, like so many of us, started listing all the reasons he wasn't the one.
But God didn't argue with Moses' resume. He didn't hand him a new set of tools or send him back to Egypt with a army. He asked a simple question: 'What is that in your hand?'
A staff. That's all. A worn, ordinary shepherd's stick — the thing Moses had carried for forty years on the back side of the desert. Nothing impressive. Nothing anointed-looking. Just the daily tool of a forgotten man tending sheep.
And God said, in essence, 'Throw it down.' When Moses did, it became a serpent — and when he picked it back up at God's command, it became the staff that would part the sea, strike the rock, and hold up his arms in battle. The same wood. The same weight. But now it was yielded to God.
Sister, we do this all the time. We look at what God is calling us to and we say, 'But I don't have what it takes. I don't have the platform, the resources, the training, the connections.' And God is asking us the same question He asked Moses: 'What is that in your hand?'
Maybe it's a kitchen and a love for feeding people. Maybe it's a pen and a story He's written on your heart. Maybe it's a sourdough starter, a prayer closet, a living room that could hold six women and a Bible. Maybe it's the very thing you've been doing so long you've stopped seeing it as anything holy.
The miracle was never in the staff. It was in the surrender of it. Whatever is in your hand today — the ordinary, the familiar, the thing you've been carrying around the desert for years — that is exactly what God is asking for. Lay it down. Let Him pick it back up. And watch what He does with a life that says yes.
Father, You are the God who uses ordinary things. You don't ask me for what I don't have — You ask for what is already in my hand. Show me what that is. The gift, the skill, the season, the resource I've been overlooking. Help me lay it down without holding back, and trust You to do more with it than I ever could. Use my yielded hands for Your glory.
Reflect
- 1.What is the 'staff' in your hand right now — the ordinary thing you've carried so long you've stopped seeing its potential?
- 2.What would it look like to literally lay that down before God this week and say, 'Use this'?
- 3.Where have you been waiting for a 'better' tool instead of yielding the one you already hold?
