Back to School — and the Smiling Faces

Matthew 25:40

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Back-to-school season is always bittersweet — the summer winding down, the notebooks and sharpened pencils coming out, the children a little taller than they were in May.

This year we had the joy of partnering with a local church for a back-to-school community outreach, and it was one of those days you feel in your spirit long after it ends.

We provided backpacks filled with supplies, new clothes for the school year, and free haircuts so every child could walk through those school doors feeling ready and dignified. But honestly? The backpacks and the haircuts were the smallest part of it.

What I'll carry with me is the smiling faces. The little girl spinning in her new dress. The boy grinning at his fresh fade in the mirror. The mamas wiping their eyes because someone saw them, someone showed up, someone helped carry the load.

Jesus said that whatever we do for the least of these, we do for Him. I've read that verse a hundred times, but on Saturday it came alive. Every backpack handed over felt like handing something to Jesus Himself. Every hug from a grateful parent felt like worship.

That's what the Kingdom looks like when it shows up in a parking lot on a Saturday morning. Not a stage, not a spotlight — just daughters of God loving people the way He loves them. Practical, present, and full of joy.

If you've ever wondered whether small acts matter, they do. A backpack. A pair of shoes. A haircut. A smile. In the Kingdom, none of it is small. It all matters, because the people matter.

Prayer

Father, thank You for the privilege of loving people the way You love them. Thank You for every smiling face, every grateful parent, every child who walked in a little taller. Use us again, Lord. Keep our hearts soft and our hands open, ready to be Your hands and feet wherever You send us.

Reflect

  • 1.When was the last time a small, practical act of love moved your own heart toward God?
  • 2.Who in your community might be carrying a 'back-to-school' load quietly this season?
  • 3.What is one way you can partner with your local church to show up for families this week?
